GENERAL INFORMATION

Length: 2.5 m Weight: 1,000 kg Feeding: Herbivore Period: Middle Miocene to early Pleistocene Possible habitat: Plains and grassy steppes Discovery: Europe, 1903 Species: 9

HISTORY

Paracamelus is an extinct genus of camel that migrated across the Bering Strait from North America to Eurasia and spread throughout Europe, North Africa and China. Fossil records show that they moved in groups or herds, similar to the behaviour of modern camelids.

CHARACTERISTICS

Although there are no major records of this species before its diversification, it is suggested that there were some arid environments during the late Miocene and that Paracamelus was able to adapt to them. It fed mainly on grasses, shrubs, foliage and bushes. In drier environments, Paracamelus was able to adapt its diet by feeding mainly on thorny plants.
